A Hard Pill to Swallow: Why AJNA Chose the Tougher Road
If you’ve ever walked into a supplement store looking for something to help you sleep, ease your anxiety, or manage pain, you know the overwhelming feeling of standing in front of shelves filled with pretty labels and big promises. We believe that the supplement industry thrives on that confusion. No clear standards. No guarantees. Just a sea of anecdotes, marketing, and a frustrating lack of consistency.
As someone who helped pioneer the CBD movement through Charlotte’s Web, I’ve seen both the potential and the pitfalls of plant-based medicine. We fought hard to make cannabis accessible. But I’ve also seen how the lack of regulation and oversight has made it almost impossible for consumers to know what they’re actually taking. What’s on the label is not always what’s in the bottle. While there are some good companies in CBD and dietary supplements, they can be very difficult to find and verify.
And that’s a problem, especially for people who are using botanicals like cannabis as true medicine.
When we founded AJNA BioSciences, we knew we were going to ruffle some feathers. Some in the cannabis world now look at us like we’ve gone to the dark side. I get it. We’re working within the pharmaceutical system. We’re conducting FDA trials. We’re aiming for federal approval. To a few, that feels like turning our backs on the very movement we helped create.
But here’s the truth: this is the natural evolution of the movement. It’s what comes next when you genuinely care about the people using these medicines.
We didn’t set out to create a pharmaceutical company because it was easy. We did it because it is necessary. It is the only way to ensure that these plant-based therapies are safe, consistent, covered by insurance, and accessible to the people who need them most: veterans and refugees with PTSD, children with autism, and trauma survivors battling anxiety or depression. We believe that these people deserve the current FDA pathway, which is the only regulatory process in the U.S. that ensures standardized evaluation of safety, efficacy, and manufacturing consistency for therapies.
Botanical medicine deserves the same rigor as any other form of medicine. That doesn’t mean stripping away the spirit of the plant. It means honoring it by understanding it deeply—how it works, in what dose, with what side effects, and in which patients. That’s how you build trust. That’s how you move from anecdote to evidence. And that’s how you protect the integrity of this work for generations to come.
AJNA isn’t abandoning the cannabis movement. We’re carrying it forward with science, integrity, and the same mission we started with: to help people heal.
